Yanchep bushfire downgraded but threat remains as Perth is set to swelter

Two out-of-contol bushfires are posing a threat to lives and home in Perth’s north as the city prepares to swelter through four consecutive days of 40C heat.

A total fire ban remains in place for the cities of Swan and Kalamunda and the shires of Mundaring, Chittering and Gingin.

Yanchep

Early Thursday morning the Department of Fire and Emergency Services downgraded the warning for the fire in Yanchep from an emergency to a watch and act.

The warning is for people bounded by Two Rocks townsite to the north, Yanchep National Park including Yanchep Golf Estate to the east, Eglington to the south and Two Rocks Road and Marmion Road to the west in the City of Wanneroo.

DFES says while the fire has been contained, it is still not controlled and a threat to lives and homes remains.

A bushfire advice is place or people the northern part of Two Rocks including Seatrees Estate on Breakwater Drive and the eastern part of Yanchep.

There is no threat to lives ore homes in that area but people should remain alert.

The Department for Child Protection and Family Support has set up a temporary evacuation centre at Gumblossom Community Centre at 17 Tapping Way, Quinns Rocks.

The blaze has burned through 650 hectares, with the Yanchep National Park closed and firefighters on scene with aerial crews assisting.

Some 90 personnel remain on the scene and Yanchep Beach Road, Old Yanchep Road and Indian Ocean Drive from Breakwater Drive to Pipidinny Road are all closed.

Bullsbrook

A bushfire watch and act is in place for or people in an area bounded by North Avenue, Kimberley Street and Great Northern Highway in Bullsbrook in the City of Swan.

DFES says while the fire is out of control and a threat to lives and homes remains.

Great Northern Highway in both directions at North Avenue.

Firefighters are on the scene, actively fighting the blaze and motorists are asked to avoid the area.

Petrol station destroyed

Yesterday the Yanchep blaze destroyed a petrol station and burnt at least one home.

A second home was saved by fire crews with flames within metres of the property.

A man who has lived near Kinkuna Park on the outskirts of the fire said it was "a little too close to home" for him.

Watching on as the fire tore through bushland backing in to the suburb he said he hoped it didn't come closer.

"To think people lit fires [intentionally] it's just shocking. It's disgraceful," he said.
