The Israeli army says soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian who was throwing petrol bombs on a West Bank street near Bethlehem.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said there were two suspects hurling the Molotov cocktails on Thursday night and that the lives of drivers on the street were in danger.

"IDF troops operating in the area acted to stop the suspects by firing towards them. One of the suspects was hit. IDF troops administered initial medical treatment at the scene, but the suspect succumbed to his wound," an army statement said on Friday.

The second Palestinian was detained by the Israeli troops.

Palestinian authorities confirmed the young man's death. According to Israeli media reports, he was 16 years old.
