Travellers arriving into WA from NSW will need to immediately self-isolate until they return a negative result for coronavirus.

The change comes as NSW on Saturday recorded two new cases of the virus, bringing the cluster linked to a shopping centre in the city’s eastern suburbs to six.

A 60-year-old limousine driver is thought to be the source of the outbreak of the highly transmissable delta strain, NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said on Saturday.

“This delta virus would appear to be a near and present danger to anybody who is in the vicinity,” he told reporters.

The new cases come a day after Sydneysiders were ordered to wear face masks on public transport until Thursday and Queensland and Tasmania tightened border restrictions for people travelling from NSW hot spots.

Anyone in WA who has been to the NSW exposure sites must be immediately tested and self-quarantine for 14 days from the exposure date, regardless of their result.

Premier Mark McGowan acknowledged the changing travel advice would cause “disruptions” but were necessary for public health.

“The situation in NSW is fast evolving and concerning given the outbreak involves the Delta strain of the COVID-19 virus,” he said.

“Based on the latest health advice, we’re introducing extra precautionary measures with immediate effect to protect Western Australians.”

NSW Health administered a record 17,763 COVID-19 vaccines in the 24 hours to 8pm Friday night, including 6,222 at the vaccination centre at Sydney Olympic Park.
