Alison Mary Lauder: Meth addled mother jailed for arson again, after setting Perth alight for the second time

A meth-addled mother has been jailed for lighting two potentially disastrous fires at the height of Perth’s scorching 2024 summer — seven years after being jailed for another arson spree. In 2016, Alison Mary Lauder was jailed for more than two years after authorities pinpointed her as the cause of 16 fires started in Success, Yangebup, Jandakot and South Lake. At the time, she claimed “deep shame and regret” over the blazes, and her lawyer said she was “reaching out in a bizarre way for someone to help”. In January last year, Ms Lauder needed help again, after her mental health had spiralled within a background of substance and alcohol abuse. Perth’s District Court was told she had called 38 different psychological services to try and get an appointment. But defence lawyer Cameron Cole said she felt “stonewalled and roadblocked in those efforts”. And so, while intoxicated, Lauder twice went to service stations, took paper towels from dispensers, then walked onto bushland — first in Cockburn Central then in Bibra Lake — and lit two small fires. “She categorically accepts that she’ll be sentenced to a term of imprisonment ... and she told me that she felt quite poignant that this was the test that she had felt in the last 20 years,” Mr Cole said. Judge Charlotte Wallace said the community was fortunate that firefighters extinguished both blazes quickly. “It takes one spark to be carried by a gust of wind effectively to cause really devastating consequences for the community. Luckily that didn’t happen here,” she said. “The risks for loss of life and destruction of homes can be just so devastating and profound for the community.
