A man who allegedly led police on a wild pursuit before a tense, one-hour stand off in Cloverdale has been denied bail — after a magistrate described his previous criminal record as “atrocious”.

Derek Paul Monck, 27, is alleged to have reached speeds of up to 100 km/h in a 50km/h zone in Belmont, whilst also driving on the wrong side of the road, on verges and eventually losing a tyre as he tried to escape.

The pursuit ended when Mr Monck crashed his Blue Mitsubishi sedan into a wall outside a house in Epsom Avenue, Cloverdale.

But Mr Monck is then alleged to have run off, hiding in various gardens, before being flushed out by police dog Mako.

After over an hour of negotiations with police, he surrendered.

Mr Monck appeared in Perth Magistrates court today charged with reckless driving to escape pursuit by police, failing to stop, no authority to drive, possessing meth and trespass.

Police prosecutors also told the court charges of burglary and robbery were also pending. Magistrate Adam Hills-Wright refused bail, with Mr Monck to return to court next week.
