A man has been charged with murdering his six-year-old daughter and her mother in a stabbing attack in Melbourne.

The girl and her 39-year-old mother were both found with critical injuries at a home in Mill Park on January 13.

The woman died at the scene while the girl was rushed to hospital, where she later died.

A 10-year-old girl managed to flee the scene uninjured.

At the time, Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said it was a very difficult time for the surviving girl.

"She's been through an absolutely terrible, traumatic incident ... we want to make sure she's as good as she can be," he said.

Police believe the woman ran to a neighbour's home, pursued by the attacker, to call for help. Neighbours alerted emergency services.

They understand the man is the woman's husband and the father of the two girls.

Police on Tuesday charged the 40-year-old man with their murders.

The man, who remains under police guard in hospital, will face Melbourne Magistrates Court at a later date.
