A chlorine gas leak has now been contained in a remote Aboriginal community in the Pilbara, which earlier prompted a HAZMAT warning.

A chlorine gas leak from a water treatment plant was causing potentially hazardous gas in the Yandeyarra community, about 140km south of Port Hedland, according to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

Firefighters managed to stop the gas leak just before 3.30pm on Thursday.

Earlier DFES warned there was a “direct threat to the community”, urging residents to stay inside with doors and windows closed.
