A motorcyclist has broken both his legs and is in hospital under police guard after a fiery crash in Welshpool.

Police patrolling Leach Highway tried to stop the 37-year-old man about 4am yesterday, as they believed the Honda motorcycle he was riding was stolen.

“The rider initially stopped, however, when the officers exited their vehicle it will be alleged the rider accelerated away, crossing to the wrong side of Leach Highway,” a media release stted.

“The officers did not continue to intercept the motorcycle and a short time later heard a loud crash further up the road.”

Both the motorcycle and the Jeep Grand Cherokee that was struck head-on caught fire.
