Airport upgrades, new jetties, toilets and walking trails are a step closer to being completed under the $10 million Abrolhos Islands investment.

Acting environment minister Francis Logan today announced a tender for construction of the two new jetties on East Wallabi and Beacon islands.

The two jetties are expected to be completed early next year.

Under the investment plan, announced last year, the existing jetty on East Wallabi Island will be demolished and replaced with a larger one capable of catering to vessels up to 20 metres in length.

Minister Logan said the investment would ensure protection and conservation of the islands and open it up to new tourism opportunities.

“By improving visitor facilities on the islands, we are creating new possibilities for nature-based tourism and recreation, resulting in new jobs and economic opportunities for the Mid West.”

The jetty construction is part of a larger investment into tourism and management infrastructure in the national park, with future plans to construct new toilets, shade shelters, walking trails.

As part of the investment the airstrip on East Wallabi Island would also be upgraded.
