Cash for new industries announced at Geraldton regional innovation summit

The State Government announced almost $500,000 in grants for new industries at a Regional Innovation Summit in Geraldton today.

The summit is looking at how regions can develop skills for the future, attract investment and develop regional innovation.

The $486,000 awarded will go to:

* Small and medium-sized enterprises in the marine industry — fishing, aquaculture, boat building, tourism, energy and offshore engineering.

* Small and medium-sized enterprises working across the mining, renewable energy, agriculture and agricultural technology sectors.

* Regenerative agriculture and clean energy.

* Connecting and supporting entrepreneurs.

* Supporting start-up ventures and growth of existing businesses in Kimberley Aboriginal communities.

Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan said regional WA’s prosperity and international competitiveness depended on its ability to innovate.

“We must think differently and invest in the creativity of our talented people if we are to out-smart the rest of the world, and the Regional Innovation Summit is part of driving this change,” she said.

Innovation and ICT Minister Dave Kelly said the ability to take innovations successfully to market was a key factor in regional competitiveness.

“This Summit presents an opportunity for innovators from across the State to come together and discuss how we can turn challenges into opportunities for new jobs,” he said.

“With advances in science, robotics, AI and ICT being accelerated it is important that we leverage new technologies while ensuring that all Western Australians can take advantage of the benefits such technology brings.”
