The City of Greater Geraldton will support the Geraldton Yacht Club’s third bid for State Government funding to improve its facilities, with one councillor saying the club helped keep kids out of trouble.

The club is seeking $47,000 — about a third of the project’s total cost — to enclose the undercroft of its west-facing balcony, providing more storage for its junior assistance boats and small training boats.

Cr Peter Fiorenza said he supported the youth-focused proposal.

“What better way to be engaged than with the sailing community ... I think that is very important in these times of problems with adolescents in the community,” he said.

This will be the club’s third bid for funding from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries’ Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund.

The council supported both previous bids, but they were rejected at a State Government level. The City supported other successful bids in the 2019-20 financial year, including floodlight installation on Eighth Street, lighting for the BMX area at Woorree Park, and bitumen resurfacing at the Mid West Kart Club.
