Geraldton community service providers receive grants to help operations during Homelessness Week

Geraldton community service providers have been successful in obtaining grants during Shelter WA’s Homelessness Week grant program. Homelessness Week runs between Monday, August 5 and Sunday, August 11, to raise awareness within the community on the issue and promote different services available to those experiencing homelessness or rough sleeping. Short Term Accommodation for Youth (STAY) have successfully been awarded a grant from Shelter WA, which will help the program continue providing support for Geraldton children, teenagers and young adults. Evy Tibayan is a youth support outreach worker with STAY and said the funding goes towards breaking barriers for young people trying to find housing. Ms Tibayan said one of the most pressing issues for young people was sourcing identification documents, which were vital in accessing government resources or support services like State housing or Centrelink. “One of the other biggest barriers facing young people is transport. So we’re looking at taxi services to help,” Ms Tibayan said. She said the existing housing crisis was exacerbated in the regions and felt by disadvantaged young people. “There aren’t as many accommodation services in the regions, and with the housing crisis now — that is another challenge to face,” she said. A community winter drive during Homelessness Week, hosted by Centacare, Regional Alliance West and STAY, also received a grant from Shelter WA. The drive will bring clients and staff from each service provider together through and interactive and informative quiz with prizes, as well as a soup and toastie day.
