The City of Greater Geraldton has been recognised in this year’s WA Seniors Awards.

In a pool of every local government in the State, the The City was named the most age-friendly local government in WA.

The nod recognised the Queen Elizabeth II Seniors and Comm-unity Centre, which has hosted social, physical and mental health wellbeing programs since 1986.

“The City of Greater Geraldton’s QEII Seniors and Community Centre shows just how important local government can be in enabling seniors to live their best lives, particularly by harnessing the dedication and value of more than 25 volunteers,” Seniors and Ageing Minister Don Punch said.

The centre caters to an average of 2800 participants per month, providing seniors with social contact, physical exercise classes, and access to support services.

The seniors award It comes after the City was named as one of the most accessible communities in WA for the second time running in October.

“City staff have really championed a strong approach and we are seeing this through the delivery of our own events, as well as supporting and advising external event organisers to embrace increased accessibility,” Mayor Shane Van Styn said.

“This award recognises all the hard work that has gone into developing and maintaining this facility as a space for everyone in our community.

“This work has been especially valuable during the pandemic when so many have felt isolated.”

The City of Greater Geraldton is hosting an event this Friday at the QEII Centre for the International Day of People with a Disability . Starting at 4pm, with there will be a free sausage sizzle, karaoke, and games of goalball. – a sport for the vision impaired where a ball embedded with bells is rolled into a defending team’s goal.
