Geraldton’s Muslim community gathered at the Beresford mosque early on Thursday to mark the end of Ramadan, the fasting month, during which many took no food or liquids during daylight hours.

Celebrations for Eid, a time of feasting and hospitality to mark the end of that very disciplined four weeks, had begun the previous night.

According to the 2016 Census, the City of Greater Geraldton had 536 Muslim residents, comprising 1.4 per cent of its population.

The mosque was founded by Grand Imam Abdul Kudus, a member of the Cocos Malay community which is the nucleus of Geraldton’s Islamic community.

It has been joined by parishioners from many other countries who have been attracted to Geraldton by job opportunities and the mosque.
