Players and supporters of sport in Broomehill gathered at the town’s recreational complex on Saturday for Pink Stumps Day, a charity fundraiser in aid of the McGrath Foundation.

The foundation raises money to pay for breast cancer nurses and was a cause first adopted by the cricket club after two mums of players were diagnosed with the disease.

Saturday’s activities raised $2000 for the charity set up by Australian cricket great Glenn McGrath, whose wife Jane died of breast cancer in 2008.

What started as an effort by the Broomehill Cricket Club has grown to include all the town’s sporting clubs including tennis and bowls, seniors and junior alike.

Cricket stalwart Jack Batchelor said the charity was close to the hearts of the cricket club members.

“It started up probably eight years ago for personal reasons at the cricket club and has included all the town’s clubs for the last four years,” he said.

The event takes place annually at the beginning of February when as many of the sporting sides as possible are playing at home.

The first-team cricketers tackled Kojonup on Saturday – winning by a hefty 107 runs – with Batchelor paying tribute to their opponents.

“It’s not always against Kojonup on Pink Stumps Day but it’s great when it is because they are massive supporters of the event and always stay behind to get involved,” he said.

The sporting contests featured about 140 players, parents and supporters with 80 staying on for the Pink Party later in the evening which featured food, raffles, awards and a fearsome pink punch.
