Communities spanning from Yarloop to Binningup gathered outside memorials to show respect for Anzacs

Thousands of South West residents packed out dozens of Anzac Day services across the region on Sunday, with some among the biggest turnouts across the State.

RSL sub-branches in the area held ceremonies in Harvey, Yarloop, Brunswick and Binningup, all of which drew big crowds turning up at dawn to pay their respects.

It came as the Perth and Peel regions — which included towns such as Waroona — were placed into a snap lockdown over the weekend and instead took to their driveways to pay their respects.

In Harvey, a march along Uduc Road was led by the 10th Light Horse Troop and included a wide variety of community members and veterans.

The post-march service included hymns from the Harvey Community Choir and an address from David Marshall OAM.

RSL president Eric Hall said he was very pleased with the service and its turnout.

Sub-branch member Kevin Reale said the day was a great success.

“There was a few less veterans, but the service was very good,” he said.

Harvey resident John Rose said he and his wife were glad to have commemorated in person.

“Even last year was quite good too but this, I think, is much better,” he said.

Harvey Bowling Club member Oscar Dunn attended the service before the club’s annual game against Australind.

“I just remember the people that have saved the country and made a better place for us to live in,” he said.

Brunswick saw a morning march that included old military vehicles and horses, ending at the War Memorial for the wreath laying, Last Post and flag raising.

Locals were pleased the service could take place and gathered in the hall following the march to hear addresses from guest speaker Cr Michelle Campbell.

Yarloop’s dawn service had a major turnout with more than 150 community members gathering at the War Memorial.

Binningup locals could be seen gathered at the Country Club after their dawn service.
