Warning as mozzie virus detected in Australind

Harvey Shire Council has issued an emergency Ross River warning for the western side of the Leschenault Estuary.

The virus has been detected in mosquitoes earlier than usual and has caught the attention of Harvey shire environmental health officer Scott Dandrige.

“The early detections around Buffalo Road are a pre-warning and we will be bringing forward our helicopter treatment for the area,” Mr Dandridge said.

“We will have to treat about 50ha.

“Don’t be complacent, we have got early signs that it could be a big season.”

Harvey Shire president Paul Gillett urged residents to take precautions.

“The Shire is doing all it can but this is a gentle reminder to cover up, take repellent and look after yourself,” Cr Gillett said.

He also said he contracted the virus three years ago. “It was not very pleasant, aching joints and sleepless nights,” he said.

The unseasonal activity led the council to issue a series of warnings to adults and children.

Parents should ensure infants and children are adequately protected with suitable clothing, bed nets and other forms of insect screening, use mosquito coils and lanterns around the home when outdoors and remove water holding containers.
