Malcolm Sweetman: Vietnam veteran spends night in hospital corridor before brain surgery

A Vietnam veteran has been forced to spend the night in a hospital corridor while waiting for brain surgery, in yet another example of the dire state of WA’s over-stretched hospital system. Malcolm Sweetman, 79, was put into a ward corridor at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital on Sunday afternoon, the night before an urgent operation to remove a golf ball-sized brain tumour. His daughter, Carole Anderton, said her dad was a strong, independent man but the experience had reduced him to tears. “It’s shocking,” she said. “People are getting train stations and train lines, but the sick aren’t getting proper beds in hospital. “Regardless of whether you’re a public patient or not, people deserve better from our health system. “This is third world when people are sleeping in corridors.” Ms Anderton said her father woke from a nap at his Wellard home last Monday unable to speak, so she called an ambulance. He was rushed to Fiona Stanley Hospital where tests found the tumour. Transferred to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, she said he was moved several times before his bed was parked in a corridor with a privacy screen. Ms Anderton said it was hard enough knowing her dad was having brain surgery without dealing with the extra stress and frustration. “It’s really upsetting,” she said. “He was worried about his possessions being out in the open as well. ”It’s not fair that people are going through this.” Mr Sweetman could at least share a bathroom with two others in a nearby room instead of being forced to use public toilets, unlike three other patients whose plights were highlighted in the media after they were also treated in SCGH corridors. They included retired Esperance farmer Ian Hay, 83, who last week spent more than 24 hours in a hallway while battling mesothelioma. Asked if it was acceptable for a patient to spend the night in a corridor before brain surgery, Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson conceded it was not ideal but hospitals were stretched. “It’s never ideal to have a loved one spending time in a corridor and I understand that,” she said at the announcement of an agreement to deliver an 80-bed “medihotel” in Murdoch. “We are in peak demand. We are in our winter surge capacity and our hospital beds are in use. “This government, in this term alone, has increased our in-patient hospital beds by 700 beds. “So in one term, we’ve added the equivalent of one of the largest tertiary hospitals in the country. We’ve also increased our staffing by 30 per cent . . . to support our increased demand.” Ms Sanderson blamed the Federal Government for not providing enough aged care places to ease the pressure placed on hospitals by an ageing population. “Hospitals are blocked at the back end,” she said. “We have 96 to 100 per cent occupancy of aged care beds in WA. We do not have enough residential aged care beds. “So we need the Commonwealth to step up.” A North Metropolitan Health Service spokesperson said hospitals had higher admissions during winter months, but the focus was on ensuring patients were properly cared for and triaged according to clinical needs.
