Royal Flying Doctor Service helicopter takes off from Royal Perth Hospital helipad after breakdown

UPDATE: Royal Perth Hospital’s helipad is back in action after a Royal Flying Doctor Service helicopter broke down at the site, forcing diversion plans to be put in place. It is understood the chopper encountered technical issues on Wednesday night which prevented other aircraft such as the RAC Rescue helicopter from landing at the hospital for several hours. As a result, a RAC Rescue helicopter patient had to be delivered to Fiona Stanley Hospital as a “precautionary measure”. Specialist repair crews were at the site on Thursday morning and the helicopter had taken off by 11.30am. “As per standard process, any rescue helicopters headed to RPH will be diverted to Perth’s other tertiary hospitals – Sir Charles Gairdner and Fiona Stanley,” RPH said in an earlier statement. “If required, processes are also in place to have a rescue helicopter land at Langley Park in the Perth CBD. “At no point has patient safety been compromised.” RFDS general manager of operations Damien Whitham said a technical issue was identified in the chopper before taking off from the hospital on Wednesday evening. Mr Whitham said “the safety of patients and crews is always the first priority for the RFDS, Royal Perth Hospital and the other health partners the organisation works with every day”. “Our adaptability in these circumstances with Royal Perth Hospital, the RAC Rescue helicopter crew and others involved are a credit to our shared response processes and teamwork across the network,” he said. “As a result, plans were made early for a RAC Rescue helicopter patient to be delivered to Fiona Stanley Hospital as a precautionary measure.” Shadow health minister Libby Mettam said the incident highlighted a concerning gap in emergency response facilities but was confident healthcare workers took the appropriate precautions to ensure patient safety wasn’t compromised “Day after day, we hear a Labor Government going from crisis to crisis in our hospital system. Our health workers deserve better. Our patients deserve better,” she said. RFDS and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, which operates the RAC Rescue helicopter, have been contacted for comment.
