WA ambulance ramping surges to fourth worst month on record

WA has recorded its fourth-worst month on record for ambulance ramping, with July figures surging to their highest peak since COVID-19 was rife. Figures from St John WA reveal that as of July 30, ambulances spent 6364 hours parked outside hospital emergency departments waiting to hand over care of patients. Even with the last day of data yet to be finalised, it was the fourth highest month on record since the WA peak of 6972 was recorded in July 2022, when hospitals were flooded with COVID cases. The second and third highest ramping peaks were recorded in August 2022, with 6949 hours, and August 2021, with 6525 hours. Royal Perth Hospital had the most ramped hours in July, with 1438, followed by Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital on 1144 and Fiona Stanley Hospital with 1040. The data also shows that ambulance response times have been getting worse as the number of hours ambulances are forced to wait outside hospitals goes up. St John’s publicly reported response times for priority one calls in the metropolitan area show that, on average, only 82 per cent of calls made in July were met within 15 minutes. The target is 90 per cent. WA Liberal leader Libby Mettam seized on the figures as evidence of a health system “in crisis”. “Every hour an ambulance sits on a ramp is an hour the patient inside is not receiving hospital care and an hour the ambulance can’t help other patients,” she said. “WA is living in an era of out-of-control ramping, exhausted and overworked healthcare professionals, unprecedented elective surgery and specialist waitlists, and unacceptable patient deaths, because of this Labor Government’s inaction.” Ms Mettam said despite Premier Roger Cook’s recent claims that ambulance ramping was trending down, it had risen six months in a row and was now worse than at any point in 2023. “Roger Cook has been in the health portfolio and then Premier almost continuously since 2008 — this is a crisis entirely of his making,” she said. Mr Cook said that while last financial year’s figures were down more than 20 per cent on the previous 12 months, the health system was continuing to see challenges with ramping during the winter months. “We continue to be challenged and particularly in these winter months,” he said. “Our WA virtual emergency department has been able to divert 322 ambulances in July alone. That’s the equivalent of around four days of presentations at the emergency department at Fiona Stanley Hospital. “We’re also looking at those things that can improve the way we look after patients in our hospitals. “We recognise that it’s tough during these winter months — we know that for instance aged-care at the moment is between 97 and 100 per cent occupancy. “So that means we are struggling to get patients who need to transition from hospital to an aged-care facility, and as a result of that we are getting a certain amount of bed blockage at what we describe as the back end.” The surge in ramping figures comes just days after The West reported on the plight of patients spending more than 24 hours being treated in corridors while waiting for rooms to become available at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. They include retired Esperance farmer Ian Hay, 83, who is battling mesothelioma, and Vietnam veteran Malcolm Sweetman, 79, who had to sleep in the hallway the night before he had brain surgery.
