Injury throws Josh Curran’s shock State of Origin bid into doubt

Josh Curran is set to miss a month of footy with a knee injury, casting doubt over his shock bid to become the New Zealand Warriors’ second NSW Origin player. In March, Blues coach Brad Fittler named Curran as a bolter for this year’s series, having been impressed by his breakout season last year and his start to 2022. “You’ve just got to love his attitude. But Curran now appears highly unlikely to make his Origin debut in Game 1 on June 8. The Warriors revealed on Friday that the knee injury Curran suffered against the Melbourne Storm on Anzac Day would keep him out for the rest of the month. Curran missed last week’s tight win over the Canberra Raiders and scans have now confirmed he has sustained a high grade MCL injury. “It’s hoped he’ll be fit to return against Manly Warringah on June 4,” the Warriors said in a statement. Players will go into State of Origin camp around the time Curran recovers from his injury, but given the Warrior won’t have played in the six weeks before Game 1, he appears at long odds to make the cut. Curran is vying to become just the second man in history to represent NSW while playing for the Warriors. Only Ryan Hoffman has worn the sky blue jersey while contracted with the club. Only six Warriors have played State of Origin, with Kevin Campion, PJ Marsh, Steve Price, Brent Tate and Jacob Lillyman all suiting up for Queensland.
