WA truckie shortage looms ahead of harvest as roadworks contracts, closed borders hit driver numbers

WA is facing a shortage of up to 500 truckies as a flood of mining and government contracts lure drivers, while closed borders put the brakes on interstate workers coming across to plug the gaps. One Kalgoorlie-Boulder company is understood to be seeking 30 drivers, while those servicing the Pilbara’s iron ore sector are reportedly struggling to fill spots to cope with demand. And mere weeks out from WA’s 2020 harvest beginning, concerns have been raised roadworks contracts are attracting drivers who would otherwise be turning their focus to grain transport. Western Roads Federation chief executive Cam Dumesny said east-coast drivers needed to be granted access into WA to fill the current shortage. Scott Morrison still backs opening State borders Fallout from Commonwealth help in border fight McGowan shuts down call for WA roadside tests “With the loss of FIFO drivers out of NSW and Victoria, that has created a shortage of road haulage drivers in the Pilbara, and is now expanding through to our drivers in the ag sector,” he said. “We have a lot of government roadworks going on so a lot of truck drivers and some companies which have been involved in ag work are now considering prioritising roadworks. “In the mining boom we were able to bring people over from the east or New Zealand to fill the gap but we are unable to do that now because we have a closed economy, so we have to work within the resources we have.” WA Livestock and Rural Transport Association president David Fyfe said the shortage had been a long-term problem but was no worse now than in previous years. “It is the transport industry — it is what it is,” he said. “Mining companies have these highs and lows and offer reasonably good pay ... that would take away from the agriculture industry. “I am finding more and more that mature people are understanding that a long-term job in a safe position without being away from your family is a lot better than a short-term gain which some of the mining companies do offer.” WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the State Government had introduced a free heavy haulage short course in June, endorsed by WRF, to fill skills gaps. “The course has been developed to support workers and businesses and gives drivers the end-to-end skills needed in their workplace and help jobseekers increase their employability, and will commence next week,” she said. “We will continue to work collaboratively with industry and the training sector to ensure drivers have the opportunity to learn necessary skills and people looking to reskill and work in the trucking industry have the opportunity to do so. “More than ever, it’s vital that industry prioritises Western Australian workers to fill these roles.” Mr Dumesny said truckies were critical to getting the economy booming again.
