The man was doing a U-turn on Jeffrey St at Nairne when he was suddenly forced to abandon his vehicle before it was hit by a freight train.
Police said the car was pulled more than 100m down the track at 7.45pm on Thursday.
The man was the sole occupant of the car.
The car was crumpled up to half its size, with the back of the car completely destroyed.
The rail line was closed for several hours as the forensic crash unit accessed the scene.
