Incredible footage has captured a man’s bizarre attempt to scale the mooring lines of a cruise ship docked at Sydney’s Circular Quay.

Stunned bystanders could only watch on as the man - jokingly dubbed ‘Spider-Man’ in videos posted to social media - started climbing along the ropes of the Carnival Adventure cruise ship at the overseas passenger terminal at The Rocks on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 3pm, following reports a man had tried to climb onto the ship via a mooring rope.

NSW Police said officers arrived to find the man clinging to the mooring rope, precariously suspended above the harbour.

A crowd gathered to watch as a police boat approached the scene.

Footage posted to social media shows the mooring rope being lowered towards the police vessel before an officer quickly pulls the man aboard.

The man was soon brought back ashore and escorted away from the terminal while flanked by four police officers.

A person can be heard congratulating the man on not losing his shoes during the attempt as he is marched away by police.

Police said the mooring line was lowered towards the boat, allowing officers to safely pull the man down before placing him under arrest.

The 29-year-old was taken to Day St Police Station, where he was charged with entering a cleared zone without being screened and cleared, entering a land-side restricted zone without authorisation, and entering a water-side restricted zone without authorisation.

He was granted conditional bail and is expected to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on June 11.
