Meekatharra holds talks to tackle recent spate of violence and arrests

Lisa Favazzo & Liam BeattyMidwest Times

Police, government officials, community groups and senior family members met last week to discuss a spate of violence in Meekatharra that has led to 32 arrests. Mid West Gascoyne District Supt Roger Beer — who travelled to the town to support local police — said the shire had had a peaceful few days, with no new related incidents over the weekend.

He said talks were held with WA Police, Department of Communities, Youth Justice and Mission Australia, as well as senior family members. Police held a football match and a barbecue over the weekend.

Charges laid in recent weeks have included disorderly conduct, destruction of property, and weapons-related charges. Meekatharra Aboriginal Reference Group member Darryl Curley said the town had seen progress this week, but the work was not over yet.

He said he would like to see police take more proactive action before conflicts reached a critical point.
