Police charge woman at Northgate Shopping Centre with assaulting security guard, shoplifting, carry weapon

Police say an intoxicated woman was arrested and remanded in custody after allegedly assaulting a security officer during an outburst of “loud and erratic” behaviour while inside a Geraldton shopping centre last week.

On Saturday about 3.30pm, 30-year-old Rebecca Joyce Anderson allegedly entered Northgate Shopping Centre where police said the she was drunk and carrying a can of Jack Daniels.

Geraldton police officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Chris Martin said Ms Anderson entered Jay Jays clothing store where she allegedly attempted to shoplift and began shouting verbal abuse towards the customers, acting in a loud, erratic and threatening manner.

“(She) was detained by a security guard working in the shopping centre for her behaviour,” he said.

Sen. Sgt Martin said the woman allegedly threw a full can of Jack Daniels towards the security guard but it did not make contact.

“She became violent towards security staff. When police arrived at the scene the accused was located inside Liquorland attempting to [allegedly] steal more alcohol,” he said.

Ms Anderson was charged with obstructing public officers, stealing, assault occasioning bodily harm, carry or possess a weapon used to cause fear and disorderly behaviour in a public place.

She was remanded in custody until her next court appearance on September 1.
