Narrogin Council to spend $28 million on a Revised Ten-Year Road Program 2024 to 2034

A Narrogin road program worth millions will begin in October to rectify the shire’s roads and improve local traffic and safety. The Narrogin council has adopted the $28 million Revised Ten-Year Road Program 2024 to 2034 to repair and progress the shire’s roads critical for residents’ safety, economic activities, and overall quality of life. The shire’s technical staff first developed the program with significant input from community feedback, traffic analysis, stakeholders, and the council’s road reference working group. The first stage of construction will begin in October 2024 and focus on resurfacing, structural repair, drainage improvements, and possible widening, which is expected to be completed in March next year and estimated to cost $2.8m. The Shire of Narrogin’s chief executive officer Dale Stewart said the the decision to endorse the road program was discussed thoroughly during council meetings to ensure ratepayer funds were used faithfully and optimally. “The program aligns with the needs and priorities of our community through assessment of assets need and preservation,” he said. “The council considered various factors, including technical assessments, and financial implications before adopting the program. “Upgraded roads reduce travel times, lower vehicle maintenance costs, and support local businesses by facilitating smoother transport of goods and services.” The six roads selected for the first round — Congelin Narrogin Road, Tarwonga Road, Graham Road Industrial Area, Lefroy Street, Lewis Street, and Ensign Street — were prioritised based on traffic demands, types of transport like heavy vehicles and freight movements, and the condition of the existing infrastructure. The second year from 2026 to 2027 will involve upgrading gravel roads to bitumen, such as the Narrogin Valley Road, to reduce maintenance costs and enhance durability and driving conditions. The CEO said, if required, detours will be carefully planned, marked, and communicated in advance to minimise disruption and the shire guarantees route safety and roadwork efficiency. “We are committed to maintaining and improving our road infrastructure to meet the needs of our community,” Mr Stewart said. “And appreciate the input and co-operation of our residents and stakeholders in this ongoing effort.”
