Experienced regional police officer Sergeant Simon Bickers is relishing the challenge of being the new top cop in Wagin.

Sgt Bickers started as the officer-in-charge of Wagin police on May 10, replacing former Sergeant John Bridger.

After a couple of years as the OIC in Jerramungup, further south in the Great Southern Police District, Sgt Bickers said he was excited by his latest opportunity.

He highlighted Wagin Woolorama as a key community event he was looking forward to.

“I’m your typical country copper. I’ve been in regional WA for the last 23 years and this is the fourth station to run for me,” Sgt Bickers said.

“Wagin is a bigger station, there are more staff and there will be more community challenges to face here. It is a bit of a clean slate. I’ve been doing the job long enough to identify the key issues in the town.

“I’m very community focused and I’m looking forward to meeting as many people as I can.

“I’m looking forward to the Woolorama and the visitors it will bring to town.

“Anyone that wants to come past the police station, I will make the time to see them.”

In August last year, the State Government committed $1 million to upgrading Wagin police station.

“There is a serious refurbishment going on around my office at the moment,” Sgt Bickers said.

“No new facilities, but modernisation of existing facilitates to ensure we are contemporary and it will be great once it’s all completed.

“I’d expect it to be finished by July.”
