Shire of Brookton host community awards with two inspiring people receiving citizen of the year accolade

The Shire of Brookton announced dual winners of its major citizen of the year award for 2026, with Phillip Crute and Murray Hall sharing the honour at the Australia Day presentation.

The awards were part of the shire’s Australia Day celebrations on January 26.

With incredible contributions to the community over the years, the shire announced two people were receiving the top award.

“This year’s recipients have each made an outstanding and meaningful contributions to our community, demonstrating exceptional commitment, leadership and service,” the shire said.

“Their dedication has enriched the lives of others, strengthened community spirit and reflected the values we strive to uphold as a shire.”

Mr Crute has been volunteering with St John WA since 2006, is now chairman of the local branch. He has received multiple commendations, including the St John WA Meritorious Service Award.

Beyond St John, Mr Crute has contributed to the local sporting and community groups including long-term roles with the Brookton Country Club, Old Time Motor Show committee and the Brookton and Districts Historical Society.

Mr Hall received citizen of the year for his commitment as the chief bushfire control officer for the past 14 years until his retirement in June 2025.

Mr Hall has dedicated many volunteer hours to to training, mentoring brigade members and supporting emergency operations including activating a remote communication hub during the Babakin-Corrigin fires.

He has also contributed to the development of two new fire stations and secured funding for key fire mitigation works.

The Brookton Country Club — Ladies Golf received the Community Group-Event of the Year Award for the Avon Valley Ladies Golf Association Championships which takes place in Brookton once every decade.

The weekend had strong participation with local players performing well and volunteers provided catering and evening entertainment for the community.

The Australia Day celebration had more than 100 community members attend with a lunch after the awards at the Brookton Aquatic Centre.

The afternoon was filled with family activities with pool inflatables, craft activities and live music for the community to enjoy.
