One Nation to open office in Nationals’ Queensland seat of Capricornia

Pauline Hanson has asked the Department of Finance to find a suitable premises for an additional electorate office in the Nationals’ held seat of Capricornia in Central Queensland. It was earlier reported the One Nation leader had sought to move her offices to Yeppoon, north of Rockhampton, in what could have set up a lower house contest with incumbent Nationals MP Michelle Landry. However, a One Nation spokesperson confirmed to NewsWire Senator Hanson had inquired about an additional office, not to move her office from Brisbane. The spokesperson said senators represented their state, not a specific electorate, and that the majority had offices in the state capital. Instead, Senator Hanson was looking to establish senator offices in regional Australia to improve access, and would encourage other senators to do the same. The cost to taxpayers would be factored into the decision. The seat of Capricornia has been held by the Nationals since 2013. Asked about reports Senator Hanson was moving her office, Nationals MP Michael McCormack told Sky News Ms Landry had won the seat repeatedly. “If Pauline is so serious about getting rid of Labor, why doesn’t she set her office up in Labor heartland?” he said. “You don’t need a private jet to get to Labor heartland. “Why doesn’t she run against a Labor incumbent? If she’s so serious about getting rid of this bad government as she says she is, then why doesn’t she go after Labor?” Mr McCormack said One Nation had the “right to be bullish” after its win in the NSW seat of Farrer, formerly held by one-time Opposition Leader Sussan Ley. He said voters had been “angry” and in the absence of a Labor candidate, “took it out on the Coalition”. “But, we’ll see how David Farley goes,” he said. ‘We see how ... the strong personalities of Barnaby (Joyce) and Pauline fair. “It’s a long time until the next election, lets see how they go over that period. “At the moment, One Nation is a mile wide and an inch deep. The right-wing populist party has been riding high from successive polling, with the most recent Roy Morgan poll following the 2026 federal budget putting it ahead of Labor on the primary vote. On two-party preferred, Labor would be able to barely form government 51 to 49 per cent to One Nation, according to Roy Morgan. Senator Hanson told FiveAA Radio earlier this month that she was weighing up a move from the Senate to the House of Representatives. One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce has also walked back his announced move to the Senate after defecting from the Nationals. The office of Prime Minister is selected from the biggest party in the House of Representatives, the lower house, and not the Senate.
