A Perth dad-turned-midwife has helped deliver his baby daughter on the side of the road — with the help of a calm triple-zero operator.

Little baby Layla came into the world in an unexpected rush three weeks ago.

Parked on the side of the road just five minutes from their Byford home, Daniel Parsons’ partner Kellie Walker began to give birth.

Desperate for help, the expectant dad called triple zero.

St John Ambulance State Operations Centre operator Bree Van Dyke took the call, talking Mr Parsons through the delivery and instructing him on what to do.

Ms Van Dyke told him to ensure his partner was in the most comfortable position possible and was taking deep breaths between each contraction.

She stayed on the phone with him for 17 minutes until the ambulance arrived, with the miracle birth going ahead without a hitch.

Three weeks later, the young family met with the St John call-taker in person.

St John operations manager Wil White said moments such as these were “really special”.

“It makes you feel really proud to have such a great team working in our State Operation Centre,” he said.
