Wolves maul Swans in 100 point thrashing in NPFL round three clash at Wickham Oval

Wickham Wolves bared their fangs in a 100-point thrashing of the visiting South Hedland Swans in round three of the North Pilbara Football League on Saturday.

Playing at Wickham Oval, the home side ripped apart the Swans’ defence in the opening term booting 8.3 while keeping the visitors scoreless.

Swans were able to get on the board in the second quarter but it did not slow the momentum of the Wolves who blasted another four goals to two and extended their lead to 65 points at the main break.

Wolves continued to run rampant in the third quarter with six goals to dominate the action before a four goal haul in the final quarter had the home side lope to a 100-point victory 22.14 (146) to 7.4 (46).

Landon Punch was the standout player for Wickham with six goals and was supported by his teammate Tom Higgins who bagged five.

The percentage-boosting victory moved Wolves up to second on the ladder, while Swans sit in fifth with just one victory after three rounds.

Meanwhile the Wolves’ reserves side held off a fast finishing Swans to claim a narrow five point win.

Swans started strong booting three goals to hold a 17 point lead at quarter time before the Wolves fired back in the second term to have scores level at 31 apiece.

Wolves held on to their momentum in the third term to edge out a slender four point leading at the final change.

It was a tense final quarter with Swans gaining momentum and looking set to upset the hosts before Wickham steadied to finish on top 7.8 (50) to 7.3 (45).

Meanwhile at Dampier’s Windy Ridge Oval, Dampier Sharks have got their premiership defense back on track after downing Karratha Kats by five points to secure their second win of the season.

The back-and-forth game saw the lead change multiple times until the Sharks held a game high 14 point lead at three quarter time.

The final term saw another momentum shift with Kats desperate to secure their third straight win of the season.

In the end the fast finishing visitors ran out of time with Sharks able to hold on for a four point victory 8.10 (58) to 8.6 (54).
