Gnarojin Park will be transformed into a field of fun activities on Friday with laser tag, a slip and slide, and a visit from police animals for one of the last days of the summer break.

Narrogin Police’s Blue Light Unit is hosting its annual back to school event with a focus on getting children geared up for school as the holidays wind down.

The Blue Light Unit is a program run in regional towns without a PCYC. It is supported by WA Police to deliver a range of community activities throughout the year.

The local police station have coordinated the back to school event with the help of other emergency and support services.

Police horses and a police dog will be paying a special visit to the families at Gnarojin Park.

Firefighters will be manning the slippery slide and water obstacle course on what is forecast to be another hot day in Narrogin.

DFES and police will also act out an emergency management demonstration of an incident such as a car crash to show people how the teams work together.

For a gold coin donation, children can take their pick of dunking a police officer, firefighter, teacher or parent into a pool of water at the dunk tank machine.

Narrogin officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Shannon McGeown said the event was focused on providing a fun environment to check in with families and encourage kids to get back to school.

“The topic of discussion will be talking to kids and parents, asking them if they are ready to go back to school and helping to make the arrangements to facilitate that to happen,” he said.

“If kids are new to Narrogin they can meet other kids before they start school because starting school can be quite daunting and an anxious time for young kids.

“This gives them the opportunity the week before school to mingle with the other kids and then when they start on Monday they will have a familiar face and already have that connection.”

Support services, youth groups and local schools will be running activity stalls and providing information to families.

Sen. Sgt McGeown said it was shaping up as a great way to end the holidays.

“It’s just a great day and a great community event,” he said.

“I’m especially looking forward to the laser tag.”

The back to school event will take place at Gnarojin Park from 11am to 2pm on Friday, January 28.
