Nationals WA leader says billions of dollars of investment could make Kalgoorlie-Boulder the Bendigo of WA

The State Government will need to invest more than half-a-billion dollars in water if Kalgoorlie-Boulder is to have a future that completely satisfies residents for all their lives, the Nationals WA leader says. Shane Love told the Kalgoorlie Miner the allocation of $543 million in this month’s State Budget to expand the amount of water sent down the Goldfields pipeline by 10 per cent provided certainty for the region’s current state of development. But Mr Love said it would not be enough to really unlock growth in the Goldfields. He said a whole range of investment in water, power, transport links, and industrial development was needed to turn Kalgoorlie-Boulder into a city that rivalled a centre such as Bendigo in regional Victoria. Bendigo, 150km north-west of Melbourne, has a population of about 104,000, compared with Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s 30,000. “This is something which is nation building, and we should be looking to the Federal Government as well for funding as part of the nation’s responsibility to have water in a key industrial area, because . . . this is the place where all elements could come together, and you could see . . . the development of a really broad industrial base here in Kalgoorlie,” he said. “That’s what we need because we can’t leave the place to just become a FIFO camp. “We need to have work which requires people to be here, which gives reasons for people to bring their families here. “And once you start doing that again, you’ll see improvement in education and in other services, and people more willing to stay.” Mr Love said people told him during this year’s State election campaign they were contemplating moving to Perth, or had already moved to Perth, when they got to a certain stage in their family’s life. “And that needs to be reversed, because Kalgoorlie is by far the most liveable mining town, in my view, in Western Australia, and we need to ensure that it stays a truly family friendly, liveable community where people come for a while and stay for a long time,” he said. “I think (what is needed is) a vision from the government, a vision that isn’t just about . . . 10 per cent more but (about) what we can do to actually grow Kalgoorlie-Boulder into a substantial city, into a place where you have tertiary services (to) really make this a town like a Bendigo or a Geelong, or one of those larger Eastern State towns which have all of the factors where people will be able to live their entire life here in Kalgoorlie in complete satisfaction,” he said. When the Kalgoorlie Miner suggested that would require billions of dollars in investment, Mr Love replied: “Well, the State’s making billions and billions of dollars of surpluses and putting billions and billions of billions of dollars into Metronet and its other key priorities. “I think development of the Goldfields is a key priority for the State.” Mr Love said improvements to transport links would need to be focused on both road and rail. He said the State Government’s plan to have a 50-megawatt, 500-megawatt hours vanadium flow battery installed in Kalgoorlie-Boulder by 2029 would be “useful”. “The thing is, though, you need to be able to keep the power going for more than the length of time the battery might last,” he said. “As long as Kalgoorlie is dependent on a very long (power) line (from Collie), it will need to have that reinforced. “I think one of the one of the obvious changes that could happen is the development of power supplies here rather than being dependent on the system (where) all the generation happens in Collie and is pushed out to the whole of the State. “So there’s no reason why we couldn’t see development of larger renewable projects here in the Goldfields as well.” But Mr Love said there would still be some need for back-up baseload power, whether that be coal or gas. “Gas is more practical because it can be ramped up much quicker if it’s required,” he said.
