Archbishop of Canterbury to visit

After presiding over Queen Elizabeth's state funeral at Westminster Abbey, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has his sights set on Australia.

The Anglican Church leader's packed itinerary includes meetings with Indigenous leaders, climate activists and Anglican charities in a two-week Australian tour, kicking off on October 4.

In Sydney, the archbishop will meet with Kabikabi and Gurang-Gurang elder and Anglican pastor Ray Minniecon before heading to Cairns to ordain two Indigenous women as priests.

Archbishop Welby will also travel to several regional centres to talk to Torres Strait Islanders struggling with rising sea levels, as well as those affected by catastrophic flooding in the northern NSW city of Lismore early this year.

The Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia, Archbishop Geoff Smith, said he was "looking forward to the visit immensely".

"In a world plagued by division it is good to be reminded of our common values and to cement the ties of the Anglican Church of Australia with Anglicans around the globe," he said.

"Let us draw strength from each other as we confront the imperatives of our time."

The archbishop will be in Australia until October 14.
