A tornado has flattened a home and destroyed power lines after it tore through a small town west of Sydney.

Three people were injured after it struck Meadow Flat, 170 kilometres inland of Sydney, Thursday afternoon.

Those caught up in it are now nursing a mix of cuts and neck and back injuries.

One local recalled seeing a resident with a baby having to find shelter.

“It took the house, the roof,” 7NEWS reported.

“Everything was just swirling around.”

BOM NSW this afternoon confirmed the volatile weather event had occurred.

“The Bureau of Meteorology can confirm a tornado has occurred in the Central West of New South Wales early this afternoon,” it said on Twitter.

“There are reports of damage to houses, powerlines and trees around the Clear Creek area, north north-east of Bathurst.”
