A decade without mum

For Kyle Mitchell, the disappearance of his mum from his family’s Parmelia home 10 years ago has been a decade-long bad dream he wishes he could wake from. Iveta Mitchell went missing from her home on Mearns Avenue in the early hours of May 3, 2010. She had left her home and cut through a local park after an argument with her husband. She was reported missing that day. Wedding and engagement rings belonging to the 37-year-old were found two weeks later on the front doormat of her home. Police searched bushland, a rubbish tip, a quarry where her husband Chad Mitchell used to work, and the couple’s home soon after the disappearance, but turned up nothing. Police have never found Mrs Mitchell and Kyle and his family remain without answers. “You wake up every morning thinking someone’s going to knock on your door and something’s gonna change,” Kyle said. “But unfortunately to this day I personally haven’t heard much. “I think in a situation like this you can’t really go this long without (thinking about what might have happened). There’s definitely been moments where I’ve thought the worst but since day one I’ve always thought something has to come up, someone’s got to say something.” Just seven years old at the time of his mum’s disappearance, Kyle said he had limited memories of Iveta. “I was kinda at the age where I didn’t really remember too much. . . I didn’t even get to have my tenth birthday with her,” he said. In October 2010 the investigation changed from a missing person case to a murder inquiry. But Mr Mitchell still holds onto hope that his mum is still alive. “I will personally always look at it as a missing person but at some point from a police point of view you’ve got to look at it from both views,” he said. “I keep my hopes up. I’ve got my days where I do go into a bit of a dark state of mind and think the worst but I keep my hopes up as many days as I can. “If there’s someone out there that does know something come forward. Do it anonymously if you have to.” In March 2018 Chad Mitchell broke his silence to call for a cold case review into his wife's disappearance. Then in April the same year Kyle provided a DNA sample to homicide detectives to help with their investigation, because at the time of her disappearance he was too young. “I’ve been in contact with some officers since and they’ve just said they can’t release any information because it is still open,” he said. Friends and family last week marked the 10-year anniversary of her disappearance by laying flowers at the park where she was last seen. A Facebook page to remember Mrs Mitchel was flooded with messages with many expressing their love and lamenting a decade without answers.
