Building a brighter future

The City of Rockingham has accepted a tender from LKS Constructions for the fit-out of the new Rockingham Youth Centre.

The centre, to be located on MacKinnon Street, will be a multi-purpose facility designed to give young people aged 12 to 24 a space to connect and learn new skills.

Staff from the City’s youth services and youth development teams will be based at the centre, which will host workshops, skill development sessions, forums, and community events in spaces including workshops, counselling rooms and activity rooms.

The centre will provide opportunities for young people in areas including social innovation, entrepreneurship, life skills, job readiness and leadership skills, as well as the delivery of emotional and health related support. Additionally, the centre will provide a safe after-school space for young people to meet new friends, do their homework or simply just relax.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the Rockingham Youth Centre would give young people the chance to build valuable life skills.

“Young people form a significant proportion of the community and it is crucial that the City is able to provide them with a variety of support networks and programs,” he said.

The City has budgeted $2.35 million for the project, which is inclusive of all planning, design, construction and fit out costs.

A $985,000 contribution was also made to the project by Lotterywest.

Work on the Rockingham Youth Centre should begin in mid-2020 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
