A Bridgetown business is among dozens around WA to get its hands on new innovation funding aimed at diversifying the State economy.

Hemp Squared was awarded more than $19,000 of the McGowan Government’s Innovation Booster Grants to support hemp block certification for use in social housing.

The Innovation Booster Grant is part of the State Government’s New Industries Fund to attract investment and promote the economic diversification of WA.

Recipients of the grant include a mix of founders and innovators, including 15 female founders, four regional businesses and one Indigenous founder.

Warren-Blackwood MLA Jane Kelsbie said it was fantastic to see a locally based business already thinking outside the box receive the State funding.

“The work they are doing to promote hempcrete as a sustainable construction alternative is fantastic,” Ms Kelsbie said.

“Warren-Blackwood is home to many innovative and sustainable businesses, and it’s great to see Hemp Squared in Bridgetown recognised and supported to further develop their business.”

A total of 35 other local innovative startups and small businesses were also named as part of the successful businesses.

The funding program — which this year totals more than $643,000 — was first introduced in 2011. Applications for the next round can be made on the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation website.
