Born and bred in Bunbury, Ebony Grigo has had great success sinking her teeth into a postgraduate Dental Medicine Doctorate at The University of Western Australia.

The 22-year-old is this year’s recipient of the Country Women’s Association of WA Rural Dental Scholarship.

“The CEO rang me herself to let me know I was the recipient and I was so excited,” she said.

“With all that is going on at the moment, it was such a nice surprise.”

Dentistry was not always part of Ms Grigo’s plan.

“I didn’t know straight out of school that this was something I wanted to do,” she said.

“All I knew was that I wanted to do something that involved science and helping people,” she said.

“Studying microbiology in my undergraduate degree sparked my interest and the more I looked into it, the more I thought dentistry could be a great fit for me.

“It is also the kind of career where I can return to regional or rural areas.”

With a keen interest in treating and educating children in the Wheatbelt, South West and Midwest regions of WA, Ms Grigo hopes to shape early mindsets towards oral hygiene.

“Growing up in Bunbury I didn’t receive the same interactive learning about dental hygiene that benefited my city colleagues and I want to see that change,” she said.

“I am really interested in getting into some regional areas.

“For me, a great starting point in my career would be to work in a mobile dental van that goes out to the regional areas.

“But I don’t like to get ahead of myself, I just want to see where I can go and not tie myself down to anything.”
