Labyrinth offers path to peace and hope

A project that has been in the making for five years will be officially opened this weekend, providing the Bunbury community with a new resource.

Located beside Cobblestone Drive, the Bunbury Garden Labyrinth was designed for individuals and groups of all ages and abilities to walk or move along, at their own pace, with their own outcomes.

Linda Blyth, chairperson of Projects of Heart and Soul, conceived and administered the project and said the ancient symbol served many valuable cultural, spiritual and health purposes.

“Labyrinths, some 4000 years old, are found in many countries across the globe, often for contemplation, relaxation, peace, healing and wellbeing,” Ms Blyth said.

“Ours is now listed on the World Labyrinth Locator, and will attract visitors from around the world, as well as residents.

“Bunbury now joins this ancient global tradition, inter-cultural, non-denominational and rule-free.”

Major fundraising, two art auctions and an enormous amount of local business generosity have enabled building within the budget.

“The generosity of all sponsors has been noted individually on a large sign by the entry path,” she said.

“A circular Moon Gate, designed by local artists Alex and Nicole Mickle, has been built by Piacentini & Son and, colour-lit at night, it greets people and invites them to move through the labyrinth.

Ms Blyth said Projects of Heart and Soul recently handed the labyrinth to the City of Bunbury, to be a community resource and asset.

“It is a place for transformation, harmony, and above all, for hope,” she said.

The official opening of the Bunbury Garden Labyrinth is this Saturday from 4.30pm and the public is invited to attend.
