Stellar line-up of new and intriguing exhibitions to grace Bunbury art gallery this spring

The Bunbury Regional Art Gallery team has announced a stellar new line-up of exhibitions set to take over the gallery walls from August 10. BRAG acting team leader Molly Werner said the gallery was excited to be opening a diverse selection of exhibitions. “It is an honour to be a venue for the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial this year and to host Madoda Fani’s very first exhibition in Australia while he is the artist in residence at Denmark Arts,” she said. “We look forward to welcoming gallery visitors both from our local community and from across the State and Australia over the next few months to view this eclectic range of new works.” Iluka Visions Showcasing artworks created by students in Year 7 to 12 from high schools across the South West, Illuka Visions will adorn the gallery walls from August 10 until October 27. The exhibition highlights the importance of art education and will feature collaborative artworks created by students following workshops with professional artists Alex Desebrock, Charlotte White and Deanna Mosca. A grand opening event and awards ceremony will be held on August 18. Indian Ocean Craft Triennial Ceramic artworks will be on display as part of Indian Ocean Craft Triennial 2024 featuring artists Madoda Fani and Jillian Green. Fani’s exhibition will feature bold and emblazoned-with-character ceramics inspired by the Xhosa communities of his home region in South Africa. Green’s The Upholstered Donkey will show woven tapestries interlaced with found objects that draw inspiration from two miniature donkeys, Frank and Joe. The display is part of international exhibition Codes in Parallel and will feature at BRAG from August 10 until October 27 Wallabies Activating BRAG’s front lawn Wallabies by Matthew Clarke will appear for one week from August 10. The display will feature 10 newly crafted wallabies which have previously appeared in Brisbane, Adelaide, Alice Springs, Melbourne and Sydney. Clarke’s wallabies have delighted audiences across Australia, but won’t stay long before moving on. Blooming Art From August 15, Blooming Art will return to BRAG and is set to fill the gallery with fragrant flowers showcasing creations by the Bunbury Floral Designers Club. It will appear for only four fresh days with the flower and plant material works inspired by pieces from the City of Bunbury Art Collection. Some Like it Hot This exhibition intersects sweat, sex, desire and discord in Darwin — described as Australia’s hottest and most remote capital city. From August 31 to November 10, the community can see works by much-acclaimed Territory-based artists Therese Ritchie and Franck Gohier in Some Like it Hot. The pair are known for their satirical work combining wit and humour with astute social observation, with this work about heat, place and gendered behaviour.
