The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley has voted to partially waive accommodation fees to support the return of Edith Cowan University pre-service teachers to the region later this year.

At its ordinary council meeting on March 26, the council unanimously resolved to waive 50 per cent of accommodation costs for the group, amounting to $3640.

The students will stay in Derby Short Stay Accommodation for seven nights during their June visit.

The decision follows a successful 2025 program that welcomed 10 pre-service teachers and two academics to Derby.

The initiative is designed to immerse future educators in regional and remote teaching environments while building connections with local schools and the wider community.

The waiver granted this year is, however, half that requested by the university, which had hoped the total bill of $7280, based on eight units at $130 per night, would be covered by the local authority.

However, councillors noted the importance of balancing financial responsibility with community benefit in making their decision.

During their stay, students will engage with several local education providers, including One Tree Childcare Centre, Holy Rosary School, Derby District High School and the Kimberley School of the Air.

The program also includes community activities, networking with local teachers and opportunities to connect with residents.

Council officers said in agenda documents for the meeting that supporting the initiative helped make the experience accessible for students while strengthening pathways for future teachers to consider careers in rural and remote areas.

As part of the motion passed by the councillors, the shire’s chief executive has also been directed to review the Community Funding Scheme Policy to ensure similar requests are assessed with clear consideration of benefits to the district.
