While all the official East Kimberley Football League games are set to be played in Halls Creek this year, a new sanctioned event will continue to keep footy alive in Kununurra and Wyndham over the next month.

The East Kimberley Cup will see three men’s and women’s teams from the two towns take each other on in a round-robin style, starting in Wyndham this weekend.

The Great Northern Lighting Carnival will be the first of the three in the cup where the Kununurra Demons, Ord River Magpies, Port Wyndham Crocs and the Halls Creek Hawks ladies’ squad will all go head to head.

On Saturday at Clarrie Cassidy Oval the Demons girls will play the Maggies at 12.45pm, followed by the She-pies and the Wyndham women, with the Crocs and Demons rounding out the female round at 1.55pm.

The women’s games will be played over two 10-minute halves with five extra minutes while the men’s contest will follow the same matchings at 2.40pm, 3.25pm and 4.10pm with 15-minute halves and five extra minutes.

The modified format for the carnival won’t include boundary umpires. A free kick will be awarded against the team which touched the ball last when it goes out-of-bounds.

The Halls Creek Hawks women’s team will join in the second carnival, on August 1 at Kununurra Agricultural Oval.

Kununurra Town Oval will play host to the third carnival which will be the grand final round.
