Three people killed in crash at Sans Souci in Sydney’s south

A man had fled from police conducting a welfare check shortly before a crash that killed him and two other people in Sydney’s south. Officers tried to speak to a 42-year-old man at a Gymea Bay home at about 12.30am on Saturday, but he left the property in a white Audi sedan, police say. A short time later, emergency services were called to Rocky Point Road in Sans Souci where they found the white Audi had rolled over a concrete barrier before landing on a blue Toyota Camry. The force of the crash caused the Audi to flip onto its roof and caused significant damage to both vehicles. The man driving the Audi and both the driver and a passenger of the Toyota died at the scene. Investigations into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing, with specialist officers from the Crash Investigations Unit involved. Detective Acting Superintendent Graham Hibbs said it was a “horrific scene”, with between 20 and 40 people nearby who witnessed the crash. He said officers would examine whether “considerable speed” was a factor in the crash, and whether the driver of the Audi was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Rocky Point Road remains closed in both directions between Fontainebleau Street in Sans Souci and Holt Road in Taren Point,. Local traffic diversions remain in place and motorists are urged to avoid the area.
