Great Northern Highway has reopened to traffic after a major crash involving several trucks outside of Newman forced the closure of the major highway in both directions.

Three trucks, which each had loads of about 35 tonnes, were involved in the collision, about 30km north of the Pilbara mining town, on Saturday afternoon.

It is believed the brakes on one of the vehicles suddenly locked up, causing two trucks travelling in the same direction to crash into the back of first vehicle.

No one was seriously injured in the pile-up but police said it could take up to 24 hours to clean up scene — cutting off a major thoroughfare in the State’s north in the middle of school holidays.

However, police advised the road had opened early on Sunday morning.
