A vehicle fire is causing peak hour mayhem on Mitchell Freeway northbound on Thursday evening as commuters head home for the day.

The vehicle is located at Shenton Avenue in Currambine and was reported by Main Roads at 5.29pm.

The Freeway has been reduced to a single lane which is causing heavy congestion.

Ambulance services and DFES are on the scene.

Main Roads has urged motorists to close all windows and vents, and to exercise extreme caution if driving in the area.

A crash also blocked a lane on Kwinana Freeway northbound in Bateman.

The crash was reported at 5.50pm and was located at the Freeway’s intersection with South Street.

The crash has since been cleared.

Earlier, a breakdown shut lanes on Kwinana Freeway northbound in Salter Point.

The breakdown was located on the Freeway on Mount Henry Bridge and was reported by Main Roads at 3.58pm.

The right lane was closed by Incident Response which caused heavy congestion leading up to the site.

The breakdown has since been cleared.

A crash on Great Eastern Highway westbound in Rivervale also caused congestion on Thursday evening.

The crash, which occurred at the intersection of Acton Avenue, was reported by Main Roads at 4.30pm.

The left lane was blocked by the crash and police and ambulance services were seen on site.
