Melbourne CBD stabbing: Man arrested after early morning knife attack leaves one injured

A man has been arrested after an alleged stabbing in Melbourne’s CBD early Thursday morning that left one person injured.

Police allege a man armed with a knife was acting erratically as he ran through a shopping centre carpark on Lonsdale Street about 6am.

Two bystanders pursued the man south along Elizabeth Street before detaining him near the intersection of Lonsdale Street. Officers arrived moments later and arrested a 32-year-old man from Dallas.

During the scuffle, a 41-year-old man from Maddingley was stabbed in the lower body. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A second bystander, a 35-year-old man from Sanctuary Lakes, assisted in restraining the suspect and was not injured.

Police confirmed the man was taken into custody at the scene and that an investigation in underway.

It comes after a horror daylight stabbing on Little Bourke Street on October 2, where 36-year-old Wan Lai was attacked in public.

Disturbing footage showed the offender running up to her, getting her attention, and stabbing her in the torso before fleeing the scene. Ms Lai collapsed to the ground as a passerby rushed to her aid moments later.

In response, Victoria Police’s Public Order Response Team (PORT) has ramped up patrols across Melbourne’s CBD in an effort to deter further violent crime.
