Canning Vale fire: Agnes Koh recounts moment her adult son helped her escape burning home on Southacre Drive

A mother has recounted how her son desperately tried to put out a blaze ripping through their Canning Vale home just moments after she was confronted with flames and explosions. Firefighters received a triple-0 call about 3.45pm, alerting them to a house fire on Southacre Drive in Canning Vale. Agnes Koh, who lives in the house with her adult son, said if he hadn’t told her to leave her room once the blaze began to take hold, she may have perished. “I came back home around 3pm, I went to my room, I just laid down ... then I heard an explosion,” she told The West Australian. “My son started to scream at me, mummy, get out of your room.” Ms Koh said she managed to escape, but her son stayed behind to try and extinguish the fire. She said those minutes felt like “hours” as she became worried for his safety. It is understood a neighbour, a teenage boy, rushed to the scene to assist before ushering the man out of the burning home. Ms Koh and her son were the only two people inside. The house was fully engulfed in flames upon the arrival of firefighters before the blaze was contained a short time later. Ms Koh said her kitchen and lounge room had been severely damaged, with parts of the roof collapsing as a result. Fire investigators have not yet determined the cause. St John WA were called to the house and treated three people for smoke inhalation at the scene.
