Genetics key: Rogister

For the second year in a row, Porongurup wool growers Ed and Jan Rogister were awarded champion fleece in the wool competition at the Albany Agricultural Show.

The fleece, from a 2 1/2 -year-old wether, scored 91 out of 100 which included full points for soundness and high scores for character, handle, colour and density.

The Rogisters also won the perpetual trophy sponsored by Stan Featherstone for the white golden fleece competition.

Mr Rogister said good genetics were the key and they had been using Grathyln bloodlines for 11 years.

"In superfine wool, it's an absolute no-no to chop and change from the original genetic base to become more like a Heinz variety," he said.

"We use a blend of statistical measurements but predominantly a hands-on assessment."

Councillor-in-charge Neil Frost said there were 70 entries this year, up by 10 on last year.

After nine years of organising the competition, Mr Frost handed over the reins to Geoff Willmott and thanked everyone for their support.
